Lagos traffic agency records over 38,000 violations

The Lagos State Traffic Management Authority says its technology-driven traffic enforcement system recorded more than 38,000 traffic violations across the state during the second quarter of 2026.

The General Manager of the agency, Olalekan Bakare-Oki, disclosed this in an interview in Lagos, noting that the Traffic Management Solution devices were increasingly being deployed to identify motorists who violate traffic regulations.

Bakare-Oki said, “The Traffic Management Solution devices captured over 38,000 vehicles for different traffic offences in the second quarter of the year.”

He added that, aside from technology-based enforcement, officials of the agency physically apprehended more than 3,000 vehicles for offences such as indiscriminate parking, failure to use designated bus stops, driving against traffic, illegal use of the Bus Rapid Transit lane and failure to wear seat belts.

According to him, the agency is deliberately shifting from conventional enforcement methods to technology-driven monitoring in a bid to improve compliance and reduce human interaction during traffic operations.

“We are moving from physical enforcement to technology-driven enforcement. That is why more traffic offenders were detected through our electronic monitoring system during the period,” he said.

Bakare-Oki explained that motorists captured by the electronic system are issued court papers after sufficient evidence of traffic violations has been established.

He stressed that only the Lagos State Mobile Court has the authority to determine guilt and impose penalties.

“Motorists are encouraged to appear before the Mobile Court to receive a fair hearing. Those who choose not to contest the charges may complete a waiver at our Legal Department and pay the prescribed penalty,” he added.

The traffic management boss also urged road users to obey traffic regulations to promote safety and ease congestion across the state.

He further disclosed that a joint enforcement exercise is ongoing along the Lagos-Badagry Expressway following a directive by Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu.

According to Bakare-Oki, the operation involves the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority, the Lagos State Waste Management Authority, Kick Against Indiscipline, the Internal Revenue Service Task Force and the Lagos State Ministry of the Environment.

He said the exercise is aimed at clearing refuse, abandoned vehicles and other obstructions along the corridor to improve traffic flow and environmental sanitation.
