W’Cup: Libya arrest, shave heads of Argentina supporters after violent celebrations

Libyan authorities have arrested several Argentina supporters after post-match celebrations in the city of Ajdabiya descended into violence following Argentina’s advancement at the ongoing FIFA World Cup.

According to a report by Libyan Observer on Thursday, the fans poured into the streets to celebrate Argentina’s qualification for the next round of the tournament, while also marking Egypt’s exit from the competition.

The celebrations later turned chaotic when the Argentina supporters reportedly clashed with a group of Egyptian fans, prompting security agencies to intervene.

Police said officers moved in to disperse the crowds after the disturbances disrupted traffic and threatened public order.

The incident has since generated controversy after reports emerged that some of the detained supporters had their heads shaved while in police custody.

Authorities maintained that the measure was taken because of the group’s alleged role in the public unrest and what officials described as provocative behaviour directed at Egyptian supporters.
