World Cup: Switzerland knock out Algeria, enter Last 16

Breel Embolo and Dan Ndoye were on target as Switzerland secured a 2-0 victory over Algeria to book their place in the FIFA World Cup round of 16 on Thursday in Vancouver, Canada.

Switzerland made a bright start and took the lead after just 10 minutes through Embolo, putting the Group B winners in control of the knockout encounter.

The Swiss continued to dictate the tempo and doubled their advantage almost immediately after the restart when Ndoye found the back of the net in the 46th minute, leaving Algeria with a mountain to climb.

Algeria searched for a way back into the contest but were unable to break down a disciplined Swiss defence, as Switzerland comfortably saw out the match to preserve their unbeaten run at the tournament.

The victory means Switzerland have now recorded three wins and a draw at the World Cup, having topped Group B during the first phase of the competition.

Switzerland will now face either Colombia or Ghana in the round of 16 on Tuesday, with the match also set to be played in Vancouver.

The Swiss will be aiming to reach the World Cup quarter-finals for the third time in their history.
