Brazil survived a major scare to defeat Japan 2-1 and book their place in the World Cup round of 16 after a dramatic stoppage-time winner from Gabriel Martinelli on Monday.
The five-time world champions were pushed to the limit by a spirited Japanese side that looked capable of producing one of the tournament’s biggest upsets.
Japan struck first in the opening half through Kaishu Sano, whose goal stunned the Brazilians and handed the Asian side a deserved lead.
The breakthrough boosted Japan’s confidence as they frustrated Brazil with disciplined defending and quick counterattacks.
Brazil, however, responded after the break. Veteran midfielder Casemiro restored parity in the 56th minute, rising highest to head home and relieve the pressure on his side.
The South Americans dominated possession in search of a winner, but Japan continued to resist and appeared on course to force extra time.
With the match deep into stoppage time, Martinelli delivered the decisive blow. The Arsenal forward found the net six minutes into added time, breaking Japanese hearts and securing Brazil’s passage to the next round.
The dramatic strike was the latest winning goal scored in normal time by Brazil in a World Cup match, capping a tense contest in which Japan came agonisingly close to a famous victory.
