Ivory Coast booked a place in the FIFA World Cup knockout stage for the first time in their history after Nicolas Pépé scored twice in a commanding 2-0 victory over Curaçao on Thursday.
The West African side, known as Les Éléphants, reached the last 16 in their fourth World Cup appearance, continuing an impressive campaign that has seen them emerge from a challenging Group E.
Having beaten Ecuador 1-0 in their opening match before suffering defeat to Germany, Ivory Coast needed only a draw to secure qualification.
However, they delivered an assured performance and never looked in danger against a Curaçao side that required victory to keep their hopes alive.
Pépé gave Ivory Coast the perfect start, finding the net in the seventh minute after capitalising on a defensive error.
Nineteen-year-old Yan Diomande intercepted a failed clearance and set up the Villarreal winger, who calmly finished past goalkeeper Eloy Room.
The early breakthrough settled the nerves for Ivory Coast, who controlled much of the contest in front of a lively crowd at Philadelphia’s stadium.
The team had already built strong local support after basing themselves in nearby Delaware and training at facilities used by Major League Soccer side Philadelphia Union.
Curaçao, hoping to become the smallest nation ever to reach the World Cup knockout rounds, struggled to create meaningful opportunities despite their determination.
Pépé sealed the historic victory in the 64th minute with a clinical left-footed finish from a tight angle, sparking celebrations among the thousands of Ivory Coast supporters in attendance.
The 31-year-old was withdrawn three minutes later to preserve his energy for the next round and received a standing ovation before later being named player of the match.
Ivory Coast maintained their intensity throughout the encounter and comfortably protected their advantage, ensuring Curaçao never came close to mounting a comeback.
The defeat ended a memorable campaign for Curaçao, whose squad is largely made up of players born and raised in the Netherlands.
Goalkeeper Room, 37, had been one of the tournament’s standout performers after making 15 saves against Ecuador and helping his side earn a historic goalless draw in their previous match.
Ivory Coast also welcomed striker Elye Wahi back into action as a second-half substitute after he missed the Germany game.
Wahi is currently under investigation over alleged betting-related offences dating back to his time with French club Nice.
The Ivorians will now face either France or Norway in the round of 16 on June 30, in what will be the most significant World Cup match in the nation’s history.
