The South African Football Association has failed in its attempt to overturn the three-match suspension handed to Bafana Bafana midfielder Themba Zwane by FIFA’s Disciplinary Committee.
Zwane was sanctioned following the red card he received during South Africa’s opening match of the 2026 FIFA World Cup against co-hosts Mexico last week.
The suspension ruled him out of the team’s subsequent fixtures as Bafana Bafana progressed to the knockout stage of the tournament.
Despite lodging an appeal, SAFA’s bid to reduce or overturn the punishment was dismissed by FIFA, meaning the experienced midfielder must complete the full suspension.
“We are disappointed with the outcome of our appeal because we strongly believe that the punishment is far harsher than the offense that Themba is said to have committed,” SAFA said in a statement.
The 35-year-old playmaker has already served two matches of the ban and will sit out South Africa’s Last 32 clash against fellow tournament co-hosts Canada in Los Angeles on Sunday, June 28, 2026.
While Zwane remains unavailable, Bafana Bafana have received a boost with the return of midfielder Teboho Mokoena, who is eligible for selection again after serving a one-match suspension during South Africa’s encounter with South Korea.
South Africa will return to their base camp in Pachuca, Mexico, on Thursday before travelling to Los Angeles for the knockout tie.
The team will be aiming to continue their impressive World Cup campaign and secure a place in the Round of 16 when they face the Canadians.
Zwane is expected to become available again should South Africa advance beyond the Last 32 stage.
