One person has been confirmed dead while 10 others were rescued after a building collapsed in the Alakija area of Lagos State on Thursday, as emergency responders intensified efforts to locate more victims feared trapped beneath the rubble.
The structure caved in along Old Ojo Road near Alakija Bus Stop on the Lagos-Badagry Expressway in Satellite Town, triggering a large-scale rescue operation involving several emergency agencies.
The Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service said it received a distress call at about 11:37 a.m. and immediately deployed personnel from the Ijegun-Egba Fire Station to the scene.
Providing an update, the Controller General of the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service, Margaret Adeseye, confirmed that “10 persons have been rescued alive with varying degrees of injuries and have been handed over to medical personnel for necessary treatment.”
She added that “search and rescue operations remain ongoing as emergency responders continue efforts to locate, extricate, and evacuate any persons who may still be trapped beneath the debris.”
In a separate situation report, the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency disclosed that one adult male was recovered from the collapsed structure.
The agency noted, “There are reports that additional persons, including shop owners who had resumed business, may still be trapped. Search and rescue operations remain active.”
Heavy equipment, including an excavator, has been brought in to assist rescue teams as they continue clearing debris and searching for survivors.
The coordinated operation involves the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service, LASEMA, the Federal Fire Service, the Nigeria Police Force, the Nigerian Navy, the Lagos Neighbourhood Safety Corps, the Lagos State Building Control Agency, CRCC Construction Company and the Nigerian Red Cross Society.
Authorities have urged residents and bystanders to keep clear of the area to allow emergency workers unrestricted access while rescue efforts continue.
