World Cup: Switzerland beat Canada, enter knockouts

Switzerland secured top spot in Group B at the FIFA World Cup after defeating co-hosts Canada 2-1 on Wednesday in Vancouver.

The victory ensured the Swiss advanced to the round of 32 as group winners with seven points, while Canada also progressed despite suffering their first defeat of the tournament.

With qualification on the line for both sides, the opening half failed to produce much excitement. Chances were few and far between, with the teams managing only three attempts on target combined.

The most notable moment before the break came when Swiss captain Granit Xhaka and Canadian forward Cyle Larin were both booked following a heated exchange over a quickly taken free kick.

Switzerland emerged from the interval with far greater intensity and quickly took control of the contest.

Just minutes into the second half, Ruben Vargas broke the deadlock with a clinical finish, giving the European side the advantage and shifting the momentum firmly in their favour.

The Swiss doubled their lead in the 57th minute through Johan Manzambi. The 20-year-old midfielder showed composure beyond his years as he calmly converted his chance to put Switzerland in a commanding position and leave Canada with a mountain to climb.

Canada responded through substitute Promise David, who made an instant impact by scoring with his first touch after entering the match.

The goal reignited hopes among the home supporters, but the Canadians were unable to find an equaliser despite late pressure.

Switzerland held firm to seal victory, earning a favourable knockout-stage fixture in Vancouver, while Canada now prepare for a round-of-32 clash in Los Angeles.
