Oyo declares work-free day to mark Islamic new year

The Oyo State Government has declared Tuesday, June 16, 2026, a work-free day in observance of the Islamic New Year, Hijrah 1448AH.

The announcement was made in a statement issued by the state’s Commissioner for Information, Prince Dotun Oyelade, who said the decision was taken to enable Muslims in the state celebrate the commencement of the new Islamic calendar year.

According to Oyelade, the Hijrah holds deep significance in Islam as it commemorates the migration of Prophet Muhammad from Mecca to Medina in 622 AD, an event regarded as a major turning point in Islamic history.

“As a mark of respect and solidarity with our Muslim brothers and sisters, the state government has declared Tuesday, June 16, 2026, a work-free day across Oyo State,” he said.

The commissioner urged residents to take advantage of the occasion to offer prayers for peace, unity, and progress in Oyo State and Nigeria as a whole.

He also encouraged citizens to reflect on the lessons of the Hijrah, particularly its teachings on sacrifice, perseverance, faith, and communal harmony.

“The Hijrah is a period for reflection, prayer, and strengthening community bonds. We call on all residents to use this opportunity to pray for the continued peace, unity, and prosperity of our state and nation,” Oyelade stated.

The state government expressed hope that the celebration would further promote mutual understanding, religious tolerance, and peaceful coexistence among residents of the state.
