World Cup: Australia stun Türkiye 2-0

Australia made a winning start to their 2026 FIFA World Cup campaign with a convincing 2-0 victory over Türkiye on Saturday night, spoiling the Turks’ long-awaited return to the tournament after 24 years.

Goals from Nestory Irankunda and Connor Metcalfe secured all three points for the Socceroos, who moved level on points with co-hosts the United States at the top of Group D ahead of their clash in Seattle on Friday.

FIFA president Gianni Infantino was in attendance as Australia, featuring in their sixth consecutive World Cup and seventh overall, delivered a composed display led by goalkeeper Patrick Beach.

The shot-stopper produced eight saves in an impressive performance after coach Tony Popovic surprisingly preferred him to veteran keeper Matthew Ryan.

Türkiye, who reached the semifinals in 2002 before missing the next five editions, struggled to break down the resilient Australians despite enjoying spells of pressure.

Irankunda opened the scoring in the 27th minute, racing through before firing a low shot past the goalkeeper while surrounded by defenders.

The goal came shortly after the first-half hydration break.

The 20-year-old Watford winger celebrated by punching the corner flag in homage to Australian football icon Tim Cahill. His strike also made him the youngest player ever to score for the Socceroos at a World Cup.

Türkiye nearly found an immediate response, but Beach reacted brilliantly to deny Abdulkerim Bardakcı’s powerful long-range effort.

Juventus youngster Kenan Yildiz was introduced at halftime in a bid to spark the Turkish attack, while Real Madrid midfielder Arda Güler also threatened after the break.

However, Beach once again stood firm to save Güler’s dangerous free-kick in the 57th minute.

Australia sealed the victory 15 minutes from time when Metcalfe capitalised on a costly turnover from Ismail Yüksek before calmly finishing to double the advantage.

The Socceroos will now turn their attention to a crucial showdown with the United States, while Türkiye face Paraguay, who suffered a heavy 4-1 defeat in their opening group match in Los Angeles.
