Mexico beat South Africa 2-0 in World Cup opener

Co-hosts Mexico kicked off the 2026 FIFA World Cup in style with a 2-0 victory over South Africa on Thursday night at the iconic Estadio Azteca in Mexico City.

Julián Quiñones etched his name into the history books by scoring the first goal of the tournament just nine minutes into the encounter, while veteran striker Raúl Jiménez added a second-half goal to seal a comfortable win for El Tri in the opening match of the competition.

The clash also marked another milestone for Estadio Azteca, which became the first stadium to host matches at three different men’s FIFA World Cups after previously staging games during the 1970 and 1986 editions.

The tournament’s opening day continues later on Thursday in Guadalajara, where South Korea will face Czechia at Estadio Akron in the second Group A fixture.
