Former Vice President and presidential candidate of the African Democratic Congress, Atiku Abubakar, has praised the successful rescue of 360 people who were abducted by terrorists in Ngoshe, Borno State, while calling for intensified efforts to free other victims still in captivity across the country.
The rescued individuals regained their freedom following an operation carried out by troops of Operation HADIN KAI in the Mandara Mountains area of southern Borno, a region long associated with terrorist activities.
Reacting to the development in a statement shared on his social media platform on Monday, Atiku described the rescue as a welcome relief for the victims and their families, who had endured months of uncertainty since the abduction occurred in March.
“I am delighted by reports confirming the rescue of 360 persons abducted by terrorists in Ngoshe, Borno State. Their release brings an end to months of suffering for the victims and anxiety for their loved ones,” he said.
The former vice president, however, noted that the country continues to face significant security challenges, including terrorism and banditry.
Atiku commended the military and other security agencies involved in the operation, acknowledging their commitment and professionalism in securing the victims’ freedom.
“I commend the military and all security agencies whose efforts made this successful rescue possible,” he stated.
He expressed confidence that Nigeria’s armed forces possess the capacity to defeat insurgency if given adequate support, modern equipment, and effective political leadership.
“With the right tools and strong political direction, I believe our military can bring an end to the insurgency that has troubled the nation for nearly two decades,” Atiku added.
The ADC presidential candidate also appealed to the Federal Government and security authorities to sustain rescue operations aimed at securing the release of other abducted Nigerians, including schoolchildren and teachers reportedly kidnapped in Oriire, Oyo State, and Mussa in Borno State.
“While we celebrate this achievement, efforts must continue to ensure the safe return of schoolchildren, teachers, and all Nigerians still being held by terrorists and bandits,” he said.
Atiku further advocated reforms in Nigeria’s security framework, stressing the importance of intelligence gathering, technological innovation, and proactive measures to prevent attacks before they occur.
“Our security architecture requires a strategic overhaul that prioritises intelligence, technology, and preventive actions capable of stopping criminal attacks before they happen,” he said.
The rescue operation has been widely welcomed as a significant breakthrough in ongoing efforts to combat terrorism and secure communities affected by insurgent activities in the North-East.
