Fire guts residential building in Kwara

A fire outbreak on Sunday morning has damaged parts of a five-bedroom bungalow in Ilorin, destroying a store and a room in the building before firefighters brought it under control.

The incident, which occurred around 7:10 a.m. at a residence on Obafemi Akere Street off Basin Road, prompted a swift response from the Kwara State Fire Service.

According to the fire service, the blaze was contained before it could spread to other sections of the property.

A spokesperson for the service, Hassan Adekunle, said emergency responders arrived promptly after receiving distress calls from residents.

“We received a report of a fire outbreak at about 07:10 hours on Sunday, 7 June 2026, and our men were immediately deployed to the scene,” Adekunle stated.
He explained that firefighters were able to stop the flames from engulfing the entire building.

“Our prompt intervention significantly reduced the magnitude of the fire. We prevented it from spreading beyond the affected areas of the house,” he added.

Preliminary findings indicated that the fire started from a generator set that reportedly caught fire while in use without the occupants noticing.

“Investigation so far shows that the fire originated from a running generator set, which ignited and later spread to a nearby store and a room at the rear of the building,” Adekunle said.

The Director of the Fire Service, Alabi Muhammed, advised residents to take safety precautions when using generators.

He urged proper placement, regular maintenance, and ensuring they are kept away from flammable materials and residential sections.

Authorities warned that unattended or poorly ventilated generator use remains a major cause of domestic fire outbreaks in the state.
