Team Nigeria has confirmed that it will open an overseas training camp in Aberdeen, Scotland, as part of its build-up to the upcoming 2026 Commonwealth Games.
The move is part of a broader preparation strategy aimed at fine-tuning athletes ahead of the global competition.
Before the overseas camp, local training activities will begin across the country on Tuesday, June 9, 2026.
The nationwide camping phase is expected to focus on early conditioning, medical assessments, and technical adjustments for selected athletes.
The Director General of the National Sports Commission, Hon. Bukola Olopade, has urged all sports federations to raise their performance standards as Team Nigeria enters the final stretch of preparations for the Games.
“The welfare of our athletes is non-negotiable. They are the reason we are going to Glasgow, and everything we do must reflect that,” Olopade stated.
He added, “We are optimistic this will be Nigeria’s best Commonwealth Games outing yet. We’ve studied past performances, identified gaps, and we are closing them early. Preparations have commenced in earnest and we expect every federation to match the Commission’s energy and urgency.”
On institutional backing for the campaign, Olopade reiterated the Commission’s commitment to providing full logistical and medical support to ensure optimal performance.
“The days of excuses are over. Glasgow 2026 is about results. It’s about showing the world that Nigerian sports is back on the right trajectory – focused, purposeful, and athlete-centered,” he added.
The Games, scheduled to run from July 22 to August 2, 2026, will feature more than 70 nations and territories competing across over 20 sports.
Nigeria, traditionally one of Africa’s strongest performers at the Commonwealth Games, says this edition will be guided by structured planning, data-driven athlete development, and stricter accountability across federations.
