The Kogi State Police Command has concluded an intensive training programme on weapon handling and marksmanship for 565 constables as part of efforts to improve operational effectiveness, professionalism, and service delivery within the Nigeria Police Force.
According to a statement issued on Monday by the Command’s Public Relations Officer, ASP Saliu Afusat, the exercise formed part of ongoing reforms aimed at strengthening the capacity of police personnel to tackle evolving security challenges across the state and beyond.
“The training, which commenced on 13th April, 2026 and lasted two months, was held in line with the strategic vision and initiatives of the Inspector-General of Police, IGP Olatunji Rilwan Disu, psc(+), NPM, aimed at strengthening the capacity of Police personnel to effectively address contemporary security challenges and improve public safety.”
The training culminated in a Passing-Out Parade held at the Command Headquarters in Lokoja, where the Commissioner of Police, Kogi State Command, CP Naziru Bello Kankarofi, praised the participants for their discipline, resilience, and commitment throughout the programme.
Addressing the graduating officers, Kankarofi said the training was tailored to provide both theoretical and practical knowledge on the safe handling, maintenance, and effective deployment of firearms, while reinforcing values of professionalism, accountability, and respect for human rights.
He stressed the importance of continuous training for young officers, noting that regular capacity-building initiatives remain essential to building a responsive and efficient policing system capable of meeting modern security demands.
The police commissioner also urged the newly trained constables to uphold discipline and apply the skills acquired responsibly in the course of their duties.
He reminded them that firearms issued to personnel are intended strictly for safeguarding lives and property and must be used with the highest level of professionalism and caution.
Kankarofi further acknowledged the support of the Inspector-General of Police in advancing personnel development and operational excellence, while commending the instructors and facilitators whose contributions ensured the successful completion of the programme.
“The Kogi State Police Command remains committed to improving the competence of its personnel through regular training and retraining programmes in line with the vision of the Inspector-General of Police for a professionally competent, service-driven, and people-friendly Police Force,” he added.
