Man City’s Semenyo, Guehi suffer racist abuse after Everton draw

Manchester City have revealed that forward Antoine Semenyo was racially abused during Monday’s 3-3 Premier League draw against Everton at Goodison Park, while teammate Marc Guehi was later targeted with racist messages on social media.

In a separate statement, Everton confirmed that Merseyside Police arrested a 71-year-old man on suspicion of a racially aggravated public order offence after reports from supporters and stadium staff of abuse directed at an opposition player.

“He has since been bailed with conditions, including restrictions preventing him from going within one mile of any designated sports stadium for a period of up to four hours before kick-off, during matches and up to four hours after the final whistle,” Everton said.

City praised Everton and the police for their prompt action in identifying the suspect, but also condemned the separate online abuse aimed at Guehi following the match.

The defender endured a difficult moment on the pitch, as a misplaced back pass to goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma allowed Thierno Barry to capitalise and equalise for Everton in the second half.

“We are also incredibly disappointed to hear that Marc Guehi was subject to a series of vile racist social media posts last night,” City said.

“We will continue to offer our full support to both Antoine and Marc and never accept discrimination of any kind in our game.”

The result leaves Manchester City five points behind league leaders Arsenal, although Pep Guardiola’s side still have a game in hand.
