ALGON backs Tinubu for second term, suspends three LG chairmen

The Association of Local Governments of Nigeria has declared its support for President Bola Ahmed Tinubu ahead of the 2027 general elections, endorsing him for a second term in office.

The decision was reached during the association’s 54th Expanded National Executive Council meeting held in Abuja, where representatives from all 36 states, the Federal Capital Territory, and former leaders of the body were present.

Speaking after the meeting, ALGON officials said the endorsement reflected confidence in the administration’s policies, particularly at the grassroots level.

“We believe continuity in leadership will further strengthen governance at the local level and consolidate the gains already recorded,” an official said in a communiqué issued at the end of the meeting.

The motion backing the president was moved and supported by senior members of the association, signaling broad agreement among council leaders nationwide.

ALGON noted that its position was influenced by the perceived impact of the government’s Renewed Hope Agenda, which it said had enhanced financial capacity and autonomy for local governments.

“The current administration’s reforms have improved the operational space for local councils, and we are committed to supporting policies that deepen grassroots development,” the communiqué added.

Meanwhile, the association announced disciplinary action against three of its members over alleged misconduct.

Those affected include Zakari Iliyasu of Agwara Local Government Area in Niger State, Abubakar Danladi Abdullahi of Kaiama Local Government Area in Kwara State, and Abba Shehu Tambuwal of Tambuwal Local Government Council in Sokoto State.

ALGON said the trio were suspended over allegations ranging from impersonation to actions deemed contrary to the association’s interests and constitutional provisions.

“The affected individuals no longer have the authority to act on behalf of the association,” the group stated, warning government institutions and development partners against engaging with them in any official capacity.

The council also passed a vote of confidence in its national leadership, reaffirming its commitment to unity and organizational discipline.
