Obi, Kwankwaso meet NDC leaders in Abuja amid fresh coalition moves

Former Anambra State Governor, Peter Obi, and former Kano State Governor, Rabiu Kwankwaso, on Sunday held a closed-door meeting with leaders of the Nigeria Democratic Congress in Abuja, in what appears to be part of ongoing political realignments ahead of the 2027 general elections.

The meeting took place at the Guzape residence of the party’s National Leader, Seriake Dickson, and drew the attention of supporters aligned with the Obi-Kwankwaso political movement.

Both leaders arrived at the venue in the early evening to cheers from supporters, who gathered outside the premises chanting slogans in solidarity.

Their appearance together has further fuelled speculation about a possible alliance between key opposition figures.

A source familiar with the discussions described the meeting as “strategic and forward-looking,” adding that, “there is a growing urgency among opposition leaders to find common ground ahead of 2027.”

The development comes shortly after a senior figure in the New Nigeria People’s Party, Buba Galadima, hinted that prominent politicians were set to unveil a new political platform.

Although details remain unclear, insiders suggest the platform may be connected to ongoing talks involving Obi and Kwankwaso.

Another party insider noted, “What you are seeing is part of a broader effort to consolidate forces outside the traditional structures. Discussions are still ongoing, but the goal is unity.”

Recent attempts to build a united opposition front, particularly around the African Democratic Congress, have reportedly faced internal challenges. Obi’s recent departure from the party has added to the uncertainty surrounding coalition efforts.

Kwankwaso, who leads a strong political base in northern Nigeria, is widely considered a key player in any emerging alliance. Observers believe his support could significantly influence the viability of a new coalition.
