Troops of the 12 Brigade of the Nigerian Army have foiled a terrorist logistics operation in Kogi State, apprehending three suspected couriers of arms and ammunition in Lokoja.
The brigade’s spokesperson, Lt. Hassan Abdullahi, confirmed the development in a statement issued on Tuesday in Lokoja, noting that troops recovered 314 rounds of ammunition and several AK-47 magazines during two separate operations.
According to Abdullahi, the successes were achieved as part of an ongoing three-month intelligence-led offensive targeting terrorist supply chains within the brigade’s operational area.
“In the first operation on March 29, troops along the Jamata–Owara road in Lokoja LGA intercepted a suspected courier on a motorcycle fitted with a concealed compartment for ferrying ammunition.
“Preliminary findings linked the suspect to known terrorist elements, prompting follow-on operations.
“The second success came on April 20 after credible intelligence on the movement of logistics elements.
“Troops at Response Area Oshokoshoko mounted a snap checkpoint along the Obajana–Kabba road and intercepted a Toyota bus from Makurdi, and two suspects were arrested,” he said.
He further disclosed that a thorough search of the vehicle led to the discovery of a sack containing 314 rounds of 7.62mm (Special) ammunition and three AK-47 magazines concealed behind the driver’s seat.
Other items recovered include two mobile phones, a driver’s licence, a National Identification Number slip, and an identity card.
Abdullahi added that the suspects, along with the recovered exhibits, have been handed over to the 12 Military Intelligence Regiment for further investigation.
The arrests come shortly after troops apprehended a notorious ammunition courier, Mathew Elisha, also known as Nasara, who had been on security watch lists.
He stressed that the operation highlights the alertness and proactive efforts of troops in restricting the movement of terrorist elements and dismantling their supply networks.
