Suspected armed herders have reportedly killed five people during a fresh attack on Tse Ameen community in Mbapa Council Ward, Gwer West Local Government Area of Benue State.
Residents said the attackers invaded the sleepy community on Saturday night, unleashing violence that left several people dead and others unaccounted for.
A local source, who asked not to be named, told journalists in a telephone interview on Monday that five bodies had been recovered by Sunday, while some residents were still missing.
The source said, “Five corpses, which included three males and two females, were recovered yesterday (Sunday).”
However, there are differing accounts from the authorities regarding the casualty figure.
The spokesperson for the Benue State Police Command, DSP Udeme Edet, confirmed the incident but said the number of recovered bodies was lower.
She said, “The incident is confirmed, four dead bodies were recovered.”
Meanwhile, Benue State Governor, Hyacinth Alia, had on Sunday expressed sympathy over the incident while hosting recently released abducted passengers at the Government House.
He also called on security agencies to intensify efforts to apprehend those responsible for the attack.
The community remains tense as search efforts continue for missing residents following the assault.
