FG opens applications for second phase of national TVET programme

The Federal Government has announced the commencement of applications for the second phase of its Technical and Vocational Education and Training programme, aimed at strengthening skills acquisition and tackling unemployment across the country.

The Minister of Education, Maruf Tunji Alausa, disclosed this in a statement on Monday, describing the initiative as a critical part of the government’s human capital development agenda.

“Today marks the opening of applications for the second cohort of our National TVET Programme,” he said. “It is a key step in advancing human capital development in Nigeria.”

According to the minister, the programme attracted massive interest during its first phase, recording over 1.3 million applications nationwide. He noted that the figure reflects the growing demand for practical and job-oriented skills.

“Last year’s response shows clearly that Nigerians are eager to acquire hands-on skills that can transform their lives and contribute meaningfully to the economy,” Alausa added.

He urged Nigerians across all age groups to take advantage of the opportunity when the application portal opens.

“We are calling on every Nigerian with a vision for a better future to apply. With TVET, you can build sustainable livelihoods,” he said.

The programme, which officially opens for applications on April 13, 2026, offers fully funded training in various vocational and technical fields.

It is structured into two tracks: a six-month short-term certificate programme for beginners and a one-year advanced track for individuals with prior knowledge or informal training.

Applicants are required to provide a valid National Identification Number and Bank Verification Number, while those applying for the advanced track must present proof of prior learning or relevant academic qualifications.

Successful participants will benefit from free tuition, monthly stipends, practical training, and nationally recognised certification. The initiative also includes start-up support and access to financing options to help graduates establish businesses.

Training areas span multiple sectors, including electrical installation, welding, automobile repair, agriculture, digital media, renewable energy, and fashion design.

Training will take place across centres located in the six geopolitical zones, including government technical colleges and accredited private institutions.

The programme is part of broader reforms under the administration of Bola Tinubu, aimed at improving the country’s skills development system and reducing unemployment through vocational education.
