FIFA has released the list of African referees approved for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, with seven officials from the continent securing places at football’s most prestigious tournament.
The announcement has, however, triggered mixed reactions, largely due to the omission of several well-known and experienced referees.
Reports from Africa Top Sports indicate that the selected officials include Mustapha Ghorbal (Algeria), Amin Mohamed (Egypt), Pierre Atcho (Gabon), Jalal Jayed (Morocco), Dahane Beida (Mauritania), Tom Abongile (South Africa), and Omar Artan (Somalia).
All seven referees earned their spots following impressive performances in Confederation of African Football competitions, and they will now represent Africa at the 2026 World Cup, jointly hosted by the United States, Mexico, and Canada.
Surprising exclusions spark debate
Despite the strength of the selected group, the list has generated discussion across African football circles, particularly because several established referees were left out.
Veterans such as Issa Sy and Jean-Jacques Ndala, both of whom have handled major international fixtures, were notably excluded from the final selection.
Daniel Laryea also missed out, further intensifying conversations about the selection criteria and decisions within officiating ranks.
