The Benue State Government has begun evacuating its indigenes studying at the University of Jos following heightened tension in Plateau State after a recent deadly attack.
The move comes in the aftermath of the Palm Sunday violence in Angwan Rukuba, which reportedly claimed about 28 lives and triggered unrest in parts of Jos.
In a statement issued on Friday, the Chief Press Secretary to the Benue State Governor, Kula Tersoo, confirmed that the evacuation exercise commenced on Thursday with the approval of the university authorities.
According to him, “Following the recent attack on Angwan Rukuba and surrounding communities, which led to loss of lives and widespread tension, Governor Hyacinth Alia approved the evacuation of Benue students studying at the University of Jos.”
Tersoo disclosed that more than 600 students had already been safely transported back to Benue, while additional arrangements were underway to evacuate others who indicated interest in leaving Jos.
“Over 600 students have so far been successfully evacuated, and more buses have been deployed to ensure that all remaining students and indigenes willing to return home are moved safely,” he said.
He added that the decision was taken as a precautionary measure to protect the lives and wellbeing of the students amid ongoing security concerns.
“The safety of our people, particularly young students who are the future of the state, remains a top priority for the government,” Tersoo noted.
Governor Alia also reassured residents that his administration was committed to their protection and would continue to take necessary steps to safeguard lives and property.
He further revealed that he was in communication with Plateau State Governor Caleb Mutfwang to address the situation and ensure those responsible for the attack are brought to justice.
Meanwhile, the management of the University of Jos had earlier postponed first semester examinations and directed students to vacate hostels and other residential areas following the incident.
Authorities say efforts are ongoing to restore calm in the affected communities.
