NIMC warns Nigerians against fake NIN data correction portal

The National Identity Management Commission (NIMC) has cautioned Nigerians against a fraudulent online flyer circulating on social media, which falsely claims that a free portal has been launched for correcting National Identification Number (NIN) data.

In a statement issued on Saturday via its official X (formerly Twitter) handle, the commission dismissed the claim as misleading and urged the public to disregard the link attached to the flyer.

“The public is hereby advised not to use the platform being circulated for modifying NIN data,” NIMC stated. “All data modifications should be carried out strictly through our official self-service portal.”

The viral flyer, which features the logos of both NIMC and the Federal Government, alleges that the correction portal was introduced in response to a surge in complaints from Nigerians. It lists services such as name, gender, and date of birth corrections, directing users to a suspicious web address not affiliated with any government agency.

NIMC clarified that the website linked in the message is not authorised and warned that engaging with such platforms could expose users to fraud and identity theft.

“The commission reiterates that it has not approved any new portal outside its official channels. Nigerians should remain vigilant and avoid falling victim to online scams,” the statement added.

The agency further emphasised that all legitimate NIN data modification services are only accessible through its verified self-service platform, urging citizens to always confirm information from official sources before taking action.

NIMC has consistently raised concerns about the growing trend of misinformation targeting its services and advised Nigerians to report suspicious messages or links to the appropriate authorities.
