Kano assembly begins impeachment process against deputy governor

The Kano State House of Assembly has initiated impeachment proceedings against the Deputy Governor of Kano State, Aminu Abdulsalam, over allegations of misconduct, abuse of office and breach of public trust.

The development was reported on Thursday and cited in a report by Leadership Newspaper.

The impeachment notice was introduced during plenary by the Majority Leader, Lawan Dala, and later read before lawmakers by the Speaker, Ismail Falgore.

Lawmakers stated that the move follows the provisions of Section 188 of the 1999 Constitution of Nigeria, which empowers state legislatures to begin impeachment proceedings against a deputy governor accused of gross misconduct.

A total of 38 members of the Assembly reportedly endorsed the impeachment notice. Speaker Falgore subsequently directed that Abdulsalam be officially served with the document in accordance with constitutional guidelines.

The political development comes amid ongoing tensions in the state’s political landscape following the defection of Governor Abba Yusuf from the New Nigeria Peoples Party to the All Progressives Congress last year.

However, Abdulsalam declined to leave the NNPP alongside the governor, a decision that reportedly widened divisions within the state administration and heightened speculation about his political future.

The disagreement is believed to have contributed to the current impeachment move by the Assembly.
