The Department of State Services has arrested a man suspected of being connected to the recent attack on former Labour Party presidential candidate, Peter Obi, and leaders of the African Democratic Congress in Benin City, Edo State.
According to The PUNCH, the security sources identified the suspect as Udeme Sunday Stephen, stating that he was apprehended after intelligence gathering and investigations into the incident.
Obi and several ADC chieftains were reportedly attacked last Tuesday at the residence of former Edo State Governor and party leader, John Odigie-Oyegun. The political figures had earlier attended activities at the ADC secretariat in the state capital.
Confirming the development, a source familiar with the operation said the arrest followed “a careful and coordinated investigation to identify those involved in the attack.”
The National Coordinator of the Obidient Movement, Yunusa Tanko, had earlier disclosed that the incident occurred shortly after the group returned from the ADC secretariat, where they formally received Olumide Akpata, the Labour Party’s 2023 governorship candidate in Edo, into the ADC.
Images shared after the incident showed visible damage to vehicles and parts of the property where the meeting was held.
