A cement-laden truck lost control on Monday at the Badagry Roundabout in Lagos, resulting in the deaths of a traffic officer and two commercial motorcyclists.
The victims included a Lagos State Traffic Management Authority official on duty and two motorcyclists who were waiting for passengers around 9:45 a.m.
Eyewitnesses reported that the truck suddenly went out of control as it neared the busy junction, striking the victims and creating panic in the area.
“The truck hit the LASTMA staff on official duty and two cyclists waiting to carry passengers,” an official of the Lagos State Neighbourhood Safety Corps said.
He added, “The driver tried to manoeuvre to reduce casualties; otherwise many more motorcyclists and vehicles would have been affected.”
Confirming the incident, Mr. Yusuf Sanni, Unit Commander of the Federal Road Safety Corps, said the driver has been arrested.
“The driver has been taken to Badagry Police Station,” Sanni said, attributing the crash to loss of control and advising motorists to avoid the area.
He further noted that the victims’ bodies had been deposited at a hospital mortuary, while the truck was impounded at the police station.
CSP Folajimi Agosile, Divisional Police Officer of Badagry Police Station, confirmed that the driver remains in custody pending prosecution.
“He will be arraigned at the Chief Magistrates’ Court after investigations are concluded,” Agosile stated.
Officials from the FRSC, LASTMA, the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps, and the Nigeria Police Force were present to clear the expressway and restore order following the fatal accident.
