Yobe gov approves N398m for Ramadan feeding

Governor Mai Mala Buni has approved more than ₦398 million for the 2026 Ramadan feeding programme and Tafsir sessions across Yobe State, in a move aimed at supporting vulnerable residents during the holy month.

The initiative, which will be implemented through the state Ministry of Religious Affairs and Ethical Re-Orientation, is designed to provide daily Iftar meals and expand religious teaching activities throughout Ramadan.

As part of the expansion, the number of feeding centres has been increased from 101 last year to 130 centres spread across the state’s 17 local government areas. Each centre is expected to serve about 100 fasting Muslims daily, meaning thousands of residents will benefit from the programme.

A financial breakdown of the approval shows that over ₦338 million will be used to procure rams and cooking ingredients, while ₦60 million has been set aside for allowances for clerics conducting Tafsir during the fasting period.

The government also approved the distribution of 2,300 bags of rice and 400 jerrycans of cooking oil to ensure smooth implementation of the scheme.

Speaking during the distribution flag-off in Damaturu, the Commissioner for Religious Affairs and Ethical Re-Orientation, Yusuf Umar, said the programme reflects the administration’s concern for citizens’ welfare.

“This initiative shows the governor’s commitment to assisting the less privileged, especially during Ramadan. The increase in feeding centres will allow more people to benefit,” Umar said.

He added that the programme had become a dependable relief system for many households struggling with rising living costs.

“The Ramadan feeding and Tafsir programme has continued to ease the burden on families. We urge all committee members to manage the items responsibly and in line with government guidelines,” he stated.

Umar also warned that authorities would not tolerate diversion of materials or funds.

“There will be no tolerance for mismanagement. Everyone involved must ensure transparency and accountability,” he stressed.

Ramadan, one of the five pillars of Islam, is observed by Muslims worldwide as a period of fasting, prayer, charity, and spiritual reflection.
