Benue govt reaffirms commitment to resettling displaced persons

The Benue State Government has restated its dedication to prioritising humanitarian support, safe return, and sustainable resettlement for Internally Displaced Persons across the state.

Executive Secretary of the State Emergency Management Agency, James Iorpuu, made the assurance on Thursday during the distribution of food and non-food relief materials to IDPs in various communities.

Iorpuu noted that although the donated items cannot replace the homes and livelihoods lost to conflict, they serve as essential support as the state pushes toward long-term recovery.

“These materials do not replace what has been lost, but they offer temporary stability as we work toward durable solutions,” he said.

He emphasised that the distribution process was anchored on fairness, accountability, and proper verification to ensure that only those genuinely affected benefit.

“Government remains committed to supporting you not only with relief interventions but also with long-term recovery initiatives, including livelihood support, farming initiatives, and coordinated plans for safe return to your ancestral homes,” Iorpuu stated. “Every item released is intended strictly for the IDPs.”

The SEMA boss added that the relief items included essential food supplies to address immediate nutritional needs, as well as non-food materials aimed at improving living conditions in both camps and host communities.

Iorpuu also appreciated humanitarian partners, security agencies, community leaders, camp officials, and SEMA staff for their continued support. He encouraged sustained collaboration to strengthen the state’s response system.

PUNCH Online previously reported that Governor Hyacinth Alia disclosed in January 2025 that Benue State had an estimated 1.5 million displaced persons.

The governor made the revelation while hosting officials from the United States Bureau for Humanitarian Assistance in Makurdi, where he appealed for international aid to support the state’s humanitarian needs.
