The Lagos State Government has arrested 15 suspected street traders and seized their goods during enforcement operations across key locations in the state.
Commissioner for Environment and Water Resources, Tokunbo Wahab, disclosed this in a statement on Friday, saying the action was part of efforts to tackle persistent street trading and environmental infractions.
According to him, the state’s Environmental Task Force carried out operations at Ogudu Road by Ojota Junction, Iyana-Ipaja Under Bridge, and Egbeda Junction, where traders were said to have encroached on the road and obstructed traffic.
He explained that the enforcement was necessary to restore order and improve safety for motorists and pedestrians.
“Yesterday, at different times of the day, I directed enforcement and clean-up operations across the state to address persistent street trading and environmental infractions,” Wahab said.
“Our Environmental Task Force intervened at Ogudu Road by Ojota Junction, Iyana-Ipaja Under Bridge, and Egbeda Junction, where traders had encroached on the road, obstructing traffic and compromising public safety.”
Wahab added that goods and wares were confiscated during the exercise, while 15 offenders were taken into custody.
“All suspects will be arraigned in court, and the seized items will be forfeited to the state in line with existing laws,” he said.
The commissioner reiterated that street trading remains illegal in Lagos, warning that the government would continue to enforce the law to keep roads safe and orderly.
“Street trading remains illegal in Lagos, and we will continue to enforce the law firmly and fairly to keep our roads safe, orderly, and free for all road users,” Wahab added.
He urged residents to comply with environmental regulations and avoid activities that could endanger public safety or obstruct traffic.
