Christian leaders in Southern Kaduna have strongly condemned the abduction of 177 worshippers in Kajuru Local Government Area of Kaduna State, describing the incident as unprecedented and deeply troubling.

The Southern Kaduna Christian Leaders Association said the attack marked the first time worshippers from three different Christian denominations were abducted simultaneously during church services in the area.

In a statement released on Thursday and signed by the association’s chairman, Apostle Dr Emmanuel Nuhu Kure, the leaders expressed anguish over what they described as worsening insecurity across Southern Kaduna.

“This incident has further compounded the already dire security situation in our communities,” Kure said.

“Many abductions in Kauru, Kachia and other parts of Southern Kaduna remain unresolved, leaving families in pain, fear and uncertainty.”

The association noted that the recurring kidnappings have continued to instil fear among residents and disrupt communal life, particularly the freedom to worship without threat.

Calling on the Kaduna State Government, security agencies and relevant authorities, the group demanded urgent and decisive action to secure the immediate and unconditional release of the abducted worshippers.

“We call on those entrusted with the security of lives and property to act decisively and end the cycle of kidnappings in Southern Kaduna,” the statement said.

As part of a spiritual response to the crisis, the association announced a two-day fasting and prayer programme for the safe return of all abducted persons across the region. According to the statement, the exercise, anchored on Psalm 57:2–3, will begin on Friday and conclude with special prayer sessions in churches on Sunday.

“This call to fasting and prayer is a united cry to God for mercy, protection and the safe return of our brothers and sisters from captivity,” Kure said, adding that the initiative reflects rare unity among Christians across denominations.

The group also urged Christians within and outside Southern Kaduna, as well as Nigerians at large, to show solidarity with affected communities in Kajuru, Kauru and Kachia local government areas.

“We will not be silent in the face of evil, neither will we lose hope,” the statement added. “While we trust God for divine intervention, we will continue to demand accountability and concrete action from the authorities.”
