Alavés beat Rayo Vallecano 2-0 to reach Copa del Rey quarterfinals

Deportivo Alavés returned to the Copa del Rey quarterfinals after eight years with a commanding 2-0 win over Rayo Vallecano at Mendizorroza.

Toni Martínez opened the scoring shortly after the break, taking advantage of a defensive rebound.

The contest shifted decisively when Rayo’s Isi Palazón received a straight red card only seven minutes after entering the game.

With the numerical advantage, Alavés dominated possession and patiently waited for their opportunity to seal the game. Carlos Vicente’s long-range strike late in the match made it 2-0, confirming the victory.

The hosts started energetically, controlling the right flank and creating chances, while Rayo struggled to build coherent attacks. Despite brief moments of threat before halftime, Rayo failed to convert opportunities.

After the break, Alavés’ combination of sharp counterattacks and disciplined defending proved too much for the visitors.

This result marks a milestone for Coudet’s side, who now look forward to the quarterfinals, reviving hopes of a deep Copa del Rey run.
