The Commissioner of Police for the Federal Capital Territory Miller Dantawaye, has cautioned residents, particularly women, against accepting unsolicited lifts from strangers, in a bid to reduce criminal activities across the city.
The warning was issued on Friday during a courtesy and advocacy visit to the FCT Police Command headquarters by a delegation of the Nigerian Bar Association including representatives of the International Federation of Women Lawyers, NBA Women Forum, and Unity Bar.
According to the FCT Police spokesperson, Josephine Adeh, CP Dantawaye urged residents to remain vigilant, especially when boarding commercial vehicles. “We call on members of the public, particularly women, to be cautious of the vehicles they board and to refrain from accepting free rides from strangers,” she quoted him as saying.
He further stressed the need for collective responsibility and timely information sharing to prevent and dismantle “one-chance” criminal operations in the territory.
The visit also provided an opportunity for CP Dantawaye to extend condolences over the recent killing of NBA lawyer, Princess Ochigbo.
“The Command has commenced extensive and discreet investigations into the incident, and we are committed to ensuring that those responsible are identified and brought to justice,” the statement added.
Princess Ochigbo’s body was discovered on the Kubwa Expressway on Tuesday, with her personal belongings, including her bag and identity card, found a few metres away. Reports indicate she may have been employed by the FCT High Court.
The FCT Police are also investigating the recent killing of a nurse, Chinemerem Chuwumeziem, at the Federal Medical Centre, Jabi, an incident that sparked widespread outrage and condemnation from the National Association of Nigerian Nurses and Midwives, FCT Council.
