Liverpool fear broken leg for record signing Isak – Report

Liverpool are anxiously waiting on scan results amid fears that club-record signing Alexander Isak may have suffered a broken leg following his injury in Saturday’s 2-1 Premier League win over Tottenham, reports emerged on Monday.

The Sweden international was injured while scoring the opening goal in London, colliding with Spurs defender Micky van der Ven during a sliding challenge.

Isak, 26, had only just been introduced in the second half but was unable to join in the celebrations and was eventually forced off the pitch in visible pain.

Speaking after the match, Liverpool head coach Arne Slot admitted the situation looked worrying.

“If a player doesn’t even try to come back, that is usually not a good thing but I cannot say anything more than that,” he said.

“That is just gut feeling and nothing medical… let’s not be too negative yet. We don’t know yet. Let’s hope he is back with us soon.”

On Monday, both The Athletic and Sky Sports reported that Liverpool fear the striker may have broken his leg, an injury that would rule him out for an extended period.

Isak’s first season at Anfield has been far from smooth. Since completing a British record £125 million ($168 million) transfer from Newcastle on deadline day, he has made only 16 appearances and scored three goals.

A dispute with his former club disrupted his pre-season, leaving him short of fitness on arrival, before a subsequent groin problem further stalled his progress.

A prolonged absence would be a significant setback for Slot, especially with Mohamed Salah currently away at the Africa Cup of Nations and Cody Gakpo not expected back from a muscle injury until early in the new year.

That situation leaves Hugo Ekitike who has scored five times in his last four matches and the rarely used Federico Chiesa as Liverpool’s only senior attacking options.

Liverpool, whose Premier League title defence derailed following a poor run earlier in the campaign, have now climbed to fifth place after extending their unbeaten league streak to five matches.
