NSC boss Olopade hails Ahmed Musa on international retirement

The Director General of the National Sports Commission, Bukola Olopade, has paid glowing tribute to Ahmed Musa following the Super Eagles captain’s decision to retire from international football.

Musa brought the curtain down on a distinguished 15-year international career earlier this week, marking the end of an era in Nigerian football.

Olopade described the former winger as a model professional whose commitment and patriotism set him apart during his years in the national team.

“Musa represents everything that is right about representing Nigeria; commitment, humility, resilience, and unwavering patriotism. For 15 years, he wore the green and white with pride, inspired a generation of young footballers, and delivered on the biggest stages,” Olopade said through the NSC media.

“His record as the most capped Super Eagle and Nigeria’s highest World Cup goal scorer speaks volumes about his consistency and excellence.

“On behalf of the National Sports Commission and the entire Nigerian sporting family, we thank Ahmed Musa for his selfless service and wish him continued success in the next chapter of his journey.”

Ahmed Musa leaves the international scene with a legacy defined by landmark achievements and memorable performances.

He was part of the Super Eagles squad that clinched the 2013 Africa Cup of Nations title and later helped Nigeria secure silver at AFCON 2023 and bronze at AFCON 2019.

His success began at youth level, where he won the WAFU Nations Cup in 2010 and the African Youth Championship in 2011.

On the world stage, Musa carved his name into history as Nigeria’s leading goal scorer at the FIFA World Cup, with four goals to his credit.

He is also one of only two African players, alongside the iconic Roger Milla, to score two braces at the World Cup, and currently stands as the third-highest African goal scorer in the competition’s history.
