Europa: Lyon edges Go Ahead Eagles 2-1

Lyon continued their dominant home form this season, securing their eighth victory in 10 matches across all competitions by narrowly defeating Go Ahead Eagles 2-1 in the UEFA Europa League league phase.

The win ensures Lyon remain at the top of their group.

The game burst into life almost immediately, producing three goals within the opening 11 minutes. A slick passing move saw Tyler Morton set up Afonso Moreira, who calmly slotted the ball home to give the hosts an ideal start.

But Go Ahead responded almost instantly. Corentin Tolisso lost possession high up the field, allowing Milan Smit to capitalize and score his eighth goal of the season.

Lyon quickly reclaimed the lead. Ainsley Maitland-Niles’ powerful long-range effort was parried by goalkeeper Jari De Busser, only for Pavel Sulc to react quickest and drive the rebound into the net.

Lyon came close to extending their advantage before the break, with Martin Satriano hitting the post after De Busser had already denied Moreira’s initial shot.

In the second half, Moreira had a chance to complete a personal treble but saw his effort from the edge of the area narrowly miss.

Go Ahead tried to mount a comeback, with Jakob Breum testing Lyon’s keeper Remy Descamps with a long-range strike, their first on-target attempt since equalizing.

Despite the Dutch side’s efforts, Lyon held on for a fifth victory in six UEL matches, winning all three of their home fixtures so far. Remarkably, the French side remain the only team yet to concede after the break this season.

The result also extends French teams’ unbeaten streak against Dutch sides in the UEL to seven matches, while Go Ahead remain winless in their last six away outings.

Though defeat leaves Go Ahead struggling, they can still aim for a playoff spot as the league phase progresses.
