Europa: Ferencváros hold Fenerbahce to 1-1 daw, extend unbeaten run

Ferencváros extended their unbeaten run in the UEFA Europa League to five matches (W3, D2) and stayed firmly inside the league phase’s top eight after securing a hard-earned 1-1 draw away at Fenerbahçe.

The match took time to spark into life, with Talisca recording the first meaningful effort on target in the 17th minute, his long-range strike comfortably saved by Denes Dibusz.

The Ferencváros goalkeeper stayed sharp, twice denying Marco Asensio soon after.

Despite Fenerbahçe’s early pressure, the visitors carved out the clearest openings before the break.

A long throw from Cebrail Makreckis caused confusion in the home box, allowing Barnabás Varga to pounce on Archie Brown’s poor touch and slip the ball through the legs of Yigit Efe Demir.

But Bamidele Yusuf somehow struck Ederson’s left post from only a few yards out. Moments later, he curled another effort against the opposite upright, agonisingly close to giving Ferencváros the lead.

Tensions rose just before half-time when Toon Raemaekers escaped punishment after appearing to kick out at Fenerbahçe captain Milan Škriniar while the defender was on the turf.

Both coaches opted against halftime changes, with Fenerbahçe pushing to translate their possession into goals.

Their frustration grew when Youssef En-Nesyri headed wide from an inviting Asensio corner while completely unmarked.

Missing three suspended players, including former Manchester United midfielder Fred, head coach Domenico Tedesco eventually turned to his bench with a triple substitution featuring former Aston Villa attacker Jhon Durán.

The breakthrough arrived shortly after, but it went the visitors’ way. Yusuf robbed Škriniar of possession to win a corner, Gabi Kanichowsky delivered, and Varga rose highest to nod Ferencváros in front.

Their joy didn’t last long. Fenerbahçe responded with a patient passing sequence that ended with substitute Dorgeles Nene teeing up Talisca, who powered in the equaliser despite Dibusz’s touch.

Nene nearly stole all three points when he smashed a late effort off the crossbar, while Talisca continued to test the Ferencváros keeper in a frantic finish.

Durán’s late red card, shown for thrusting his head toward Raemaekers, added further drama, but neither side could find a winner.

Fenerbahçe extended their unbeaten run in all competitions to 11 matches (W8, D3) and remain mid-table in the Europa League standings ahead of a trip to Brann. Ferencváros, meanwhile, return home to face Rangers as their impressive campaign continues.
