Europa: Malen fires Aston Villa to 2-1over win Young Boys

Aston Villa took a significant step towards qualifying from the Europa League’s opening phase, claiming a 2-1 victory against Young Boys at Villa Park.

The result was largely shaped by a commanding first-half display and a clinical performance from Donyell Malen, who netted both goals for the hosts.

The Swiss side fought back late through substitute Joel Monteiro, who pulled one back, but Villa’s dominance during the first 60 minutes proved decisive in securing the three points.

Villa asserted themselves from the start, controlling possession and keeping Young Boys pinned back. Malen tested goalkeeper Keller within three minutes, while Amadou Onana and Malen came close with early chances. Young Boys struggled to find rhythm in midfield, often resorting to long balls with little effect.

The breakthrough arrived in the 27th minute. Youri Tielemans, stationed on the right, received a pass from Bogarde and delivered a curling cross into the box

. Malen, having missed a clear opportunity earlier, connected perfectly with a low header into the bottom-right corner.

The striker doubled the lead just before half-time following an impressive team move. Morgan Rogers drove forward from deep, maneuvered past defenders, and squared the ball to Malen, who calmly slotted it across Keller to make it 2-0.

Young Boys were unable to register a shot on target in the opening 45 minutes, underlining Villa’s control. There was a brief stoppage after Malen’s first goal when objects were thrown from the crowd, but the home side’s focus remained unshaken. Villa continued to create opportunities, with Sancho seeing a last-ditch block deny him a potential third goal before the interval.

Second Half

The second period started much the same way, with Villa keeping the pressure on. Sancho forced a low save from Keller following a defensive slip, and Malen had a potential hat-trick goal ruled out for offside.

As the hour mark passed, Young Boys began showing signs of fatigue. Both managers made several substitutions: Villa brought on Buendia, Watkins, Barkley, and Konsa, while the visitors added Virginius, Sanches, Bedia, and Monteiro to bolster their attack.

In the final 20 minutes, Young Boys nearly sparked a comeback when Bedia appeared to score seconds after entering the pitch, but VAR correctly ruled the goal out for offside.

Villa responded with more attacking pressure, with Watkins testing Keller and Sancho going close after breaking through the defensive line.

Young Boys finally got on the scoresheet in the dying moments. A long ball found Monteiro, who controlled it superbly on his chest before firing a powerful volley past Martinez, setting up a nervy finish. Despite some late time-wasting by Maatsen, Unai Emery’s side held firm to claim a crucial victory at Villa Park.
