Gunmen reportedly ambushed the convoy of former Anambra State Governor, Dr. Chris Ngige, on Wednesday along the Nkpor–Nnobi Road in Idemili North Local Government Area, leaving one person dead and several others injured.

According to sources, the attackers, disguised in police and military uniforms, targeted the pilot vehicle, killing a policeman and seizing his rifle and uniform.

A woman who was reportedly filming the attack on her mobile phone was also shot dead at the scene.

In addition, a shop owner who came out to see what was happening was struck by gunfire, sustaining serious injuries.

The convoy’s escort leader, who was also wounded during the attack, has undergone surgery and is expected to make a full recovery. The pilot car was left riddled with bullets.

Dr. Ngige was not present in the convoy when the incident occurred. In a statement, Mr. Fred Chukwuelobe, Ngige’s former press secretary, confirmed the attack, saying: “I spoke with His Excellency, Dr. Ngige, who confirmed the attack and assured that all necessary measures are being taken to ensure adequate medical care for the injured. He also extended condolences to the family of the woman who was killed while recording the attack.”

The Anambra State Police Command has yet to release an official comment on the attack.
