Osimhen to miss CAF Awards for injury scan in Turkey

Super Eagles striker, Victor Osimhen, will miss this year’s CAF Awards ceremony in Rabat, Morocco, as he has returned to his club, Galatasaray, for an MRI scan on the hamstring injury he sustained while on international duty with Nigeria.

Osimhen, the 2023 African Footballer of the Year, is again shortlisted for the prestigious honour, going head-to-head with Liverpool’s Mohamed Salah and Morocco defender Achraf Hakimi of Paris Saint-Germain.

The forward is scheduled to undergo a medical examination on Wednesday (today) to determine the severity of the injury he picked up during Sunday’s 2026 World Cup African play-off final against DR Congo.

He was taken off at halftime as a precaution after feeling discomfort in his hamstring.

Just days earlier, Osimhen had fired Nigeria into the final by scoring two extra-time goals against Gabon, extending his national team tally to 31 strikes.

This year marks Osimhen’s return to the CAF Awards podium after clinching the title two years ago. His compatriot, Ademola Lookman, won the award last year.
