The Kano State Police Command has opened an investigation into the deaths of two women whose residence was set ablaze on Wednesday in Tudun Yola Quarters, Gwale Local Government Area.
Police spokesperson CSP Abdullahi Haruna confirmed the incident in a statement to PUNCH on Saturday, noting that detectives have begun piecing together the circumstances leading to the tragedy.
“Investigation is ongoing to determine the cause of the incident,” Haruna said.
The victims, identified as Hauwa’u Yakubu and Zahra’u Aliyu, were both wives of Alhaji Ashiru Shu’aibu Usaini, according to a family member.
Preliminary findings suggest that one of the women was stabbed before the house went up in flames, while the other was discovered dead inside the bathroom.
A stepson of the deceased women, Anas Shu’aibu, said the attack occurred around midday when the husband and children were not at home.
“We found the burnt body of one of them, while the other was locked in the bathroom. When we forced the door open, she was already dead,” he explained.
The bereaved husband has called on security agencies to ensure that those responsible are arrested and prosecuted.
Wednesday’s killings add to a series of violent incidents recently reported in Kano. In May, the police confirmed the arrest of the prime suspect in the murder of 22-year-old Rumaisa Haruna in Farawa Quarters, a case that drew nationwide attention.
The Kano State Police Command says further updates will be provided as investigations progress.
