A petrol tanker accident in the Jaji area of Kaduna State caused a major traffic gridlock on the Kaduna–Zaria highway on Friday after the vehicle overturned and spilled it’s contents.
The National Emergency Management Agency confirmed the incident in a statement issued on Saturday. According to the agency, the crash, which occurred on October 31, 2025, was reportedly linked to the tanker driver’s impatience.
“Upon receiving the alert, the Head of NEMA Kaduna Operations Office, Mallam Suleiman Muhammad, activated our Emergency Response Team,” the agency said.
“The Search and Rescue Unit arrived at the scene where Federal Road Safety Corps officials had already commenced response activities.”
NEMA explained that the Federal Road Safety Corps, led by the Kaduna Sector Commander, Tijjani Iliyasu, supervised the safe transfer of the spilled fuel to another tanker to prevent an explosion.
“The FRSC successfully coordinated the safe evacuation of the product into another truck, which helped avert a potentially catastrophic situation,” NEMA added.
The accident resulted in long traffic delays along both lanes of the expressway. Motorists were redirected through Amana, Mai Madaci and Turunku communities while emergency teams worked to clear the scene.
“NEMA, FRSC, security agencies and other stakeholders worked together to ensure public safety and restore traffic flow,” the agency said.
“We urge motorists to remain patient and comply with traffic instructions as normal movement resumes.”
The incident comes less than two weeks after a tanker explosion in Katcha Local Government Area of Niger State that killed more than 40 people.
