The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency says it has secured the conviction of 9,263 drug offenders out of 45,853 suspects arrested across the country in the last 30 months.
The agency also disclosed that its operatives seized over 8.5 million kilograms of illicit drugs within the same period.
NDLEA spokesperson, Femi Babafemi, made this known in a statement on Wednesday, noting that the agency’s Chairman and Chief Executive, Brig. Gen. Mohammed Buba Marwa (Rtd.), highlighted the achievements while presenting commendation letters to 220 personnel honoured for outstanding performance.
According to Marwa, the arrests, seizures and prosecutions reflect progress in reducing both the supply and demand for drugs nationwide.
“Today, we specifically recognise those who have gone above and beyond,” Marwa said.
“We celebrate those who, despite facing danger and temptation, chose integrity and selflessness in service of our mandate.”
He said the agency’s operations align with the Renewed Hope Agenda of President Bola Tinubu’s administration, adding that the recent efforts had strengthened the fight against trafficking networks.
Marwa further explained that NDLEA’s activities have also led to the counselling and rehabilitation of 26,613 drug users, as well as 9,848 sensitisation campaigns conducted in schools, workplaces, markets and worship centres.
However, he noted that the battle against drug trafficking remains challenging.
“Drug abuse and trafficking threaten our social fabric, economic stability, and national security,” he said.
“They fuel crime, corrupt our youth and provide resources for terrorism and insurgency. Yet, every cartel dismantled and every kilogram seized is a victory for Nigeria.”
Marwa also acknowledged the support of the Federal Government, international partners, civil society, the media and the National Assembly, which he said has strengthened the agency’s capacity.
NDLEA has recently reported several large-scale seizures and arrests in continuing raids across the country.
