At least 63 people have died and several others sustained varying degrees of injuries following a fatal road accident involving two buses on the Kampala–Gulu highway in Uganda early Wednesday.
Uganda Police confirmed the incident in a statement posted on X (formerly Twitter), describing it as one of the deadliest crashes in recent years.
According to the police, the collision occurred shortly after midnight when two buses traveling in opposite directions collided head-on during an overtaking maneuver.
“Preliminary findings indicate that one of the drivers attempted to overtake another vehicle and lost control, resulting in a head-on collision with an oncoming bus,” the statement read.
“The impact triggered a chain reaction that caused at least four other vehicles to lose control and overturn multiple times,” it added.
Police said all the occupants of the two buses involved in the collision died on the spot, while several others in the affected vehicles sustained serious injuries.
Emergency responders and rescue teams were immediately deployed to the scene to evacuate victims. Those injured have been taken to Kiryandongo Hospital and other nearby medical facilities for treatment.
“As of this morning, 63 people have been confirmed dead. Efforts are ongoing to identify the victims and contact their families,” police said.
