Former Nigerian international Victor Ikpeba has described the upcoming 2026 FIFA World Cup playoffs as a major challenge for the Super Eagles.
The Super Eagles secured their spot in the playoffs after a commanding 4-0 victory over Benin Republic in their final Group C encounter at the Godswill Akpabio International Stadium in Uyo on Tuesday night.
Galatasaray forward Victor Osimhen was the star of the match, netting a hat-trick, while substitute Frank Onyeka added a fourth goal to seal the win for the three-time African champions.
Cameroon, Gabon, and the Democratic Republic of Congo are among the other nations confirmed for the playoffs.
Big Task Ahead
Ikpeba, however, lamented that Nigeria failed to clinch automatic qualification for the World Cup despite their strong squad.
“People are disappointed. We should top our group with the potential we have,” Ikpeba told SuperSport.
“I can’t wait for the playoff. The games with Gabon and Cameroon are spicy. These are the great derbies in African football.
“If we have to play Cameroon, that is another struggle, another spicy game. It’s not going to come easy, in this playoff, no.”
Ikpeba Wishes Super Eagles Luck
Despite acknowledging the tough road ahead, the former Monaco striker expressed optimism that the Super Eagles can prevail with the right mindset.
“I wish our boys well. All the best of luck, and if they get to these games with the same mentality, I think we will get through it,” added Ikpeba.
The playoffs are scheduled to take place in Morocco from Thursday, November 13, to Sunday, November 16. The winner will advance to the intercontinental playoffs, where they will compete alongside five other nations for a place at the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
