The Armed Forces of Nigeria have apprehended 16 officers for alleged acts of indiscipline and violations of military service regulations.
Director of Defence Information, Brigadier General Tukur Gusau, disclosed this in a statement on Saturday, noting that preliminary investigations revealed the affected officers’ actions were linked to dissatisfaction over career stagnation and repeated failure in promotion examinations.
According to Gusau, “The Armed Forces of Nigeria wishes to inform the public that a routine military exercise has resulted in the arrest of sixteen officers over issues of indiscipline and breach of service regulations. Investigations have revealed that their grievances stemmed largely from perceived career stagnation caused by repeated failure in promotion examinations, among other issues.”
He added that some of the arrested officers were already facing disciplinary proceedings for various offences prior to the latest development.
“Some of the apprehended officers had been under jurisdiction for various offences, either awaiting or undergoing trial. Their conduct was deemed incompatible with the standards of military service,” the statement read.
Gusau assured that due process would be followed, emphasizing that those found guilty at the end of the investigation would face appropriate disciplinary measures.
“Upon completion of investigation, indicted officers will face the full military disciplinary process in accordance with established procedures to ensure accountability and preserve professionalism within the Armed Forces,” he stated.
He stressed that the military remains committed to upholding discipline, order, and loyalty within its ranks, adding that acts capable of undermining its integrity or constitutional responsibilities would not be tolerated.
“The Armed Forces will not condone behaviour that undermines the integrity of the institution or threatens its constitutional role under democratic authority,” Gusau warned.
