Tragedy struck in Kano State on Saturday when a police inspector, identified as Aminu Ibrahim, lost his life after an accidental gunshot from his service rifle.
According to The PUNCH, the incident occurred in the Hotoro area, where the late officer was reportedly on duty at a private company he was assigned to.
A police source, who spoke on condition of anonymity, said Ibrahim had excused himself to use the toilet when the unfortunate accident happened.
“Inspector Ibrahim was attached to a company in Hotoro, and he went to the toilet while on duty. In the process of squatting, the rifle he was holding discharged and the bullet struck him in the bowels. He died instantly,” the source revealed.
According to witnesses, the sound of the gunshot drew the attention of staff members who rushed to the scene and found the officer lying motionless.
Security analyst, Zagazola Makama, also confirmed the incident in a statement on X (formerly Twitter). He disclosed that the rifle, bearing registration number GT 4177, was found cocked with one empty shell.
“The rifle, with registration number GT 4177, was recovered cocked and unsafe, alongside an empty shell. Twenty-nine rounds of ammunition were accounted for against the 30 earlier issued to him,” Makama stated.
He added that the officer was quickly taken to the Aminu Kano Teaching Hospital, where a doctor on duty confirmed him dead. His remains have been deposited in the hospital’s mortuary for autopsy.
