Six people were pulled out alive on Wednesday evening after a two-storey building collapsed on Modupeola Street, Mangoro, in the Alimosho area of Lagos State.
According to The PUNCH, the incident, which occurred around 6 p.m., has renewed concerns about building safety in the state, barely two weeks after four persons lost their lives when a three-storey structure caved in at Ebute Meta.
Confirming the development, the Lagos State Commissioner for Information and Strategy, Gbenga Omotoso, said emergency responders arrived at the site promptly.
“A two-storey building has collapsed at 4 Modupeola Street, Mangoro Bus Stop, Alimosho, Lagos State. The cause of the collapse is yet to be determined, but government officials have already launched an investigation,” Omotoso said in a statement.
He explained that officials of the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency, and other first responders rescued six victims.
“The LASEMA and other first responders got to the scene in good time and rescued a trapped victim and five others from the rubble,” Omotoso added.
According to him, five of the victims were taken to a nearby private hospital, while a 44-year-old man who sustained fractures and bruises was evacuated by the Lagos State Ambulance Service to the Lagos State University Teaching Hospital, Ikeja.
“He arrived at the hospital in a stable condition and was immediately admitted for treatment,” the commissioner confirmed.
Wednesday’s incident adds to a worrying trend of building collapses in Lagos. In July, four persons narrowly escaped death after a three-storey building came down at Adeniji-Adele Road on Lagos Island.
Residents in the affected community have urged the state government to intensify enforcement of building regulations to prevent recurring tragedies.
One eyewitness, who identified himself simply as Akin, said: “We just heard a loud sound, and before we knew it, the building had collapsed. Thank God for the quick response of emergency workers, otherwise more lives could have been lost.”
