Vice President Kashim Shettima has left Abuja for New York to represent Nigeria at the 79th Session of the United Nations General Assembly.
According to a statement issued on Sunday by his Senior Special Assistant on Media and Communication, Stanley Nkwocha, the Vice President’s trip is “at the behest of President Bola Tinubu.”
President Tinubu mandated Shettima to head the country’s delegation to the high-profile gathering, as he focuses on tackling urgent domestic concerns, particularly the recent devastating floods.
While in New York, the Vice President is expected to “deliver Nigeria’s national statement, participate in key meetings on the sidelines of the event, and engage in bilateral meetings,” Nkwocha noted.
This year’s General Debate, themed ‘Leaving No One Behind: Acting Together for the Advancement of Peace, Sustainable Development and Human Dignity for Present and Future Generations’, is scheduled for September 24 to 28, 2024.
