Afriland confirms fire incident at Lagos headquarters

Afriland Properties Plc has confirmed a fire incident at its Lagos headquarters, Afriland Towers, situated on Broad Street, Lagos Island.

The company disclosed this in a statement signed by its Head of Marketing and Corporate Communications, Mr. Chukwunonso Okafor, on Tuesday, September 16, 2025.

The incident, which initially sparked confusion on social media, was wrongly reported by some users as a fire outbreak at the United Bank for Africa headquarters in Marina. UBA later clarified that only one of its branches located in the affected building was involved, stressing that “the safety and well-being of staff and customers have been secured.”

Afriland, however, confirmed ownership of the building, explaining that emergency responders acted swiftly to contain the situation.

“Afriland Properties Plc regrets to inform that a fire incident occurred today (Tuesday) at Afriland Towers, our headquarters located on Broad Street, Lagos Island. From the moment the incident was reported, the Federal Fire Service, Lagos State Fire Service, and other emergency services were promptly alerted and on the scene to contain the fire and coordinate rescue efforts. Their swift intervention was instrumental in mitigating further damage and managing the situation,” the company said.

While investigations are ongoing, preliminary findings suggest the fire started in the inverter room before smoke spread through the building, including its emergency exits.

“We are deeply saddened by this incident. Our thoughts and prayers are with all those impacted, and we extend our heartfelt sympathies to their families and loved ones,” the statement added.

The management further assured the public of its cooperation with regulators. “Afriland Properties Plc is working closely with the relevant authorities even as more information emerges. We sincerely appreciate the heroic efforts of the emergency responders, first aid workers, and members of the public who assisted with the incident today.”

The fire, which broke out in one of Lagos Island’s busiest business districts, attracted significant attention due to the high concentration of banks, insurance companies, and corporate offices in the area.

Eyewitnesses confirmed that several occupants of the high-rise were safely evacuated.
